A Super 8 projector in the middle of the audience and its quiet rattle are a characteristic of the screenings of Fanderl’s films. She usually compiles her screening programmes, which she calls “compilations”, herself, and she also operates the projector. Fanderl actually wanted to become a poet. By chance, she attended Urs Breitenstein’s Super 8 film course in the early 1980s. Filming has remained with her ever since. Later she studied with Peter Kubelka and Robert Breer, where she became acquainted with experimental film. Helga Fanderl’s films are poems. Instead of using a pen, Fanderl writes poetry with her camera. She “cuts” her films within the camera, and never reworks them. Either the film succeeds or it will not be shown.
