MICHAEL BRYNNTRUP

Super-8 films from the 80s

In November, we will embark on a journey through the wild and queer Berlin of the 80s and Michael Brynntrup will be our Beatrice. For Brynntrup, filming with his Super 8 camera was like breathing the air, with which he shaped his life at the time. As he writes, the Super 8 of the time [.] was not cinema bigger than life but life itself. His Super 8 films take us on a search for identity in which topics such as being gay, Catholicism, and homeland dominate. Brynntrup is known for his sense of humour, but the author can also be very serious and touching.

The film screening will be followed by the launch of a book Michael Brynntrup: Super 8.

About the book:

MICHAEL BRYNNTRUP: SUPER 8

The new book of images and texts by filmmaker M celebrates the magic of the Super 8 phenomenon in its 400 pages. As a mixture of work exhibition and independent opus, this ‘material book’, as the artist himself calls it, lets photos, graphics and drawings meet diary entries, reviews and film sketches. In fact, it is a dialogue between text and image, between yesterday and today — lusty, blasphemous, wild, provocative and consistently queer.
