SCREENING

6 November 2021

Ute Aurand

Already during her studies at the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (DFFB), Ute Aurand, among others with Ulrike Pfeiffer, turned to experimental film. At a film school experimental film is rather understood as a kind of exercise. Ute Aurand did not submit to the conventions of a film school, and from the beginning she made her films, as she says, “out of an inner necessity”. Inspired by films of Margaret Tait and Jonas Mekas, and stimulated by a moment, a mood, an image or a sound, she makes different films: poetic titles, a lack of dialogues, an observing, always searching camera, which reacts sensitively to the surroundings, and a montage that is created while filming. This is also how her first film “Schweigend ins Gespräch vertieft” came about, for which she received the Experimental Film Award in Oberhausen in 1981.
