MAYA DEREN and VALIE EXPORT

Maya Deren and Valie Export—two filmmakers and artists, who, at first glance, seem very different. Yet, they have much in common. There is, for example, the enormous courage to break taboos or to deal with non-conformist corporality.
Choreography is at the heart of Maya Deren’s films. She attempts to rethink dance and the dancing body through filmic means. In “Ritual”, for example, the dance is created through the manipulation of filmic temporalities from non-dancing movements. All the bodies that appear in the film carry the dance. However, this dance does not belong to any individual, it is passed from body to body. In slow and fast motion, unstable bodies break through spaces.
Valie Export is interested in the female body and patriarchal structures. In “Syntagma”,for example, Export tries in vain to adapt to an urban architecture—to find a place in it. Like Deren, Export makes passionate use of the language of film. Split screens and double exposures dissolve chronological time. They create new spaces that feed on other temporalities.
